In 1876 the City of London Corporation commissioned a competition for the design of a new public crossing in the East of London.
18 years later and with the help of 5 major contractors, 432 construction workers, over 11,000 tons of steel and 36,857 tons of Cornish granite and Portland stone, the Bridge was opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince of Wales.
Today, this iconic Grade I listed landmark now attracts over 1 million visitors every year and is an award-winning destination for evening events.
